COSTSLATE
Jamestown, Rhode Island

I’m a contractor.
I built this because I needed it.

CostSlate is job-costing software for every trade — remodeling, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, roofing — estimates, change orders, invoices and a client portal, all working off the same numbers.

Not a startup’s idea of how you work. My own budget worksheet — the one I actually run my jobs on — rebuilt as something that keeps track of itself.

Spreadsheets work. They’re just a lot of work.

I ran my jobs on a spreadsheet for years and it did the job. The math was right, the proposals looked good, and I knew where everything was. I’m not going to tell you spreadsheets don’t work, because mine did.

They’re just a lot of work. A change order means updating it in three places. Keeping track of what’s been invoiced, what’s been paid and which version the client actually has is a job on top of the job — and it all happens at night, after the day’s work is done.

So I rebuilt my worksheet as something easier to stay on top of. Same numbers, same way of working — but the change orders, the invoices and what the client sees all update themselves instead of waiting on me. That’s CostSlate. I use it on my own jobs.

The parts a contractor would build

Prices for where you actually work

A 234-item cost library adjusted to your ZIP. A framing crew in Rhode Island doesn't cost what one costs in Alabama, and the numbers shouldn't pretend otherwise.

Change orders your client signs

Send it, they open a link on their phone and put their name to it. It rolls into the contract total the moment they do — no chasing paper, no arguments later about what was agreed.

A portal that shows them the price, not your costs

Your client sees the scope, the total and what's outstanding. What you paid your subs stays yours.

Invoices that get paid

Bill by trade as the work completes, with a payment link on the invoice. Paid invoices land back on the budget sheet on their own.

Allowances that don't get lost

Every allowance tracked against what was actually spent, so the overage conversation happens while there's still time to have it.

Job templates

Kitchen, bath, deck, addition, basement, roof, new build — the trades already laid out and priced for your area. Start from a real breakdown instead of a blank sheet.
